On January 29th, 2007, the mountain was placed on Japan's candidate list for the UNESCO World Heritage. Upon the opening of Shizuoka Airport in March 2009, or a.k.a. Fujisan (Japanese word for Mt. Fuji) Airport, more and more foreigners are expected to visit Mt. Fuji and its surrounding area.
