I'm trying to do a same day return trip from Tokyo to Fuji. This looked like the best option since it gets me to the 5th station at 10:10 from Shinjuku which is earlier than any of the other options from Shimbashi (to Fujinomiya, etc.). But is the last bus really at 15:00? I've seen schedules which list the last bus much later but they're from prior years.

From the information on this site it seems almost impossible to head out from Tokyo, get to the top and return on the same day.

This is for July 1 and I saw the message about the trails potentially not being open.

Dear Contrav,
thank you for the comment.
We obtained original information from the bus company's official timetable, which can be found here:
http://www.fujikyu.co.jp/bus/highway/fuji5/time/mf_Su21.html
(They are all written in Japanese.)
Many people start climbing at night, reach the summit at sunrise, then come back to the 5th station.
We suppose that's why highway buses are scheduled this way.
Although the last highway bus for Tokyo is at 15:00, there are other buses that goes back to Kawaguchiko train station. The schedule of these buses can be found here: http://mountfujiguide.com/blog/4plus/347

Thank you for the information on the additional buses. The last bus to the Kawaguchiko train station leaves you less than 9 hours for the roundtrip on the trail. That's cutting it fairly close though, isn't it?

Do you have to make a reservation with this company before hand, if so do you know the number or website to do it. Thank you,
Beth!

Dear bethanne,
Thank you for the message.
Reservation for highway bus is not required but recommended.
The phone numbers are different depending on the bus company, so we've added a column "Bus Company" to the timetables above.
Keio Bus 03-5376-2222 (9:00~18:00)
Fujikyu Highway Bus 0555-72-5111 (7:30~18:30)
There's also an online reservation site, although it's all written in Japanese.
