Today and yesterday NHK (a Japanese public broadcaster) showed a TV program with live broadcast from the summit of Mount Fuji. I missed the today's show, but yesterday they were introducing a college professor who's conducting a research at the obsolete weather station.
The station was established at the summit of Mount Fuji in 1936, and it has been the center of Japan's meteorological observation until recently. As the technology of aerological observation and automatic observation have been improved, the station became unmanned in 2004.
The professor is a member of an NPO called "Valid Utilization of Mt. Fuji Weather Station", whose purpose is to reuse the building effectively. According to the TV show, several researchers and students are currently staying at the building (without delicious food or hot bath) to conduct researches in special fields such as High Altitude Medical Science.
One last note--the reporter said the temperature at the summit was about 7 degrees Celsius (45 degrees Fahrenheit) around noon. It looked pretty cold. FYI, here at ground level it was about 35 degrees Celsius (95 degrees Fahrenheit).
