A video of a man who fell from Mount Fuji summit

MT.FUJI NEWS NEWS MFG

One of the most frequently asked questions at Mount Fuji Guide is "can I climb Mount Fuji in winter?"
Because we are not expert climbers, we cannot give you a judgement whether you have enough skill for winter climbing or not.
All we can do is to show what kind of risks are involved in climbing the mountain in winter.
Today we found yet another news about a man who fell from the icy mountain.
Luckily the man was rescued and now recovering from fractured legs and frostbite, according to the article.
You can watch the video of the man falling down the slope here:

This is so sad.
I'll be going in December, its winter, is it gonna be much worst ?

MFG on 2009-10-05 08:26:20

Yes, the condition is much worse in winter.

Jessy Hoan on 2009-11-05 13:32:35

May I ask how do you get up to Mount Fuji in December (if you are not joining a Tour bus). I am going on 9 December 2009 but there is no bus service from Kawaguchiko Station to the 5th Station in December, the last bus service will be on 30 November 2009. I am so disappointed.
Kindly advise alternative. Thanks. Jessy Hoan - Singapore.

hi Jessy,
I believe the only alternative is taxi. Although there's no official information about the fare on the Web, I found a blog that says the fare from Kawaguchiko 5th station to Kawaguchiko train station was about 12,000 yen a few years ago. http://www5b.biglobe.ne.jp/~sekiyo/05fuzitozan.htm (only in Japanese)
Please also note that Fuji Subaru Line (the road leading to Kawaguchiko 5th station) may be closed in winter depending on weather condition.
Here are some pictures showing how much the road is covered with snow: http://fujisen.web.infoseek.co.jp/josetu.htm

Jessy Hoan on 2009-11-05 21:14:09

Thank you for the info and pictures. I am not going to risk taking taxi at Yen 12,000 which may end up not be able to go through.
