I missed my opportunity to climb in '08 (due to heavy thunderstorms), and wasn't able to reach the mainland in '09 (due to work restrictions). I'm considering a trip next year! I was supposed to return to the U.S. this past August (after being here in Okinawa for 4 years)... but decided to stay here!! Okinawa, Japan is like paradise!! Hello, I am planning to climb Mt Fuij in July 2010. I want to take the Subashiri Trail (I will be traveling with my son).
I would like to climb to the summit - but I have not found good information in english on how to go about making reservations for the night on the way up. Any suggestions?
Also, do you have recommendations of hotels/hostels/ryokans where I can stay the day before I start the climb? Gotemba? Shizouka?

hi, in general reservations can be made by phone, but I'm not sure if the mountain huts at Subashiri Trail have English-speaking staff or not. I've heard that the Mountain huts at Kawaguchiko Trail hire English-speaking staff during official climbing season, which is from July to August.
Speaking of the place to stay on the day before, Gotemba is probably the most convenient because there's a bus from Gotemba train station to the Subashiri Trail 5th station.

Just FYI, if you choose Kawaguchiko Trail, there's a highway bus from Tokyo (Shinjuku) that directly goes to the 5th station of Kawaguchiko Trail.

THank you for the information and the links. The climbing season officially starts July 1. But reading from other posts, it seems that not all trails may open that day. Is it too risky to plan a trip for July 1st? Or is it better to plan a trip mid July?

In the past couple years the trails didn't open (officially) on July 1st due to lingering snow.
Usually Kawaguchiko Trail is the first to open, followed by Fujinomiya, and Subashiri/Gotemba at the end.
