One of the most frequently asked questions at Mount Fuji Guide is "can I climb Mount Fuji in winter?"
Because we are not expert climbers, we cannot give you a judgement whether you have enough skill for winter climbing or not.
All we can do is to show what kind of risks are involved in climbing the mountain in winter.
Today we found yet another news about a man who fell from the icy mountain.
Luckily the man was rescued and now recovering from fractured legs and frostbite, according to the article.

Subashiri Trail Open to Summit

Subashiri Trails is now open to the summit.
Gotemba and Fujinomiya trails are scheduled to be open at the following dates.
Gotemba Trail: 12:00 (noon) July 9th
Fujinomiya Trail: 12:00 (noon) July 14th

Official Climbing Season

The official climbing season of Mount Fuji has started. The status of each trail is as follows.
- Kawaguchiko Trail: open to the summit
- Fujinomiya Trail: open to the 7th station
- Gotemba Trail: open to the 6th station
- Subashiri Trail: open to the 7th station
As of July 5, Kawaguchiko Trail is the only way we can climb to the top.

All trails open to the summit.

Fujiyoshida/Kawaguchiko Trail will be officially open to the summit tomorrow, July 1st 2010.
Fujinomiya Trail will be open only to the 8th station; Gotemba is 6th and Subashiri is 5th.

A highway bus runs from Shinjuku (Tokyo) to Kawaguchiko Trail 5th station (Mt. Fuji).

End of official climbing season

Official climbing season for 2009 ended on August 31.
Mountain huts will be closed within a few days (or weeks depending on each hut), and bus schedule will be shifted to off-season timetable.

The restorative construction of Tomei Highway is finished.
Highway buses will be operated normally from today, Aug 16.

Due to the earthquake that occurred on August 11, Tomei Highway is still closed from Fukuroi IC to Yaizu IC. For this reason, the following bus stops will be skipped on August 14:
Tomei Okazu, Tomei Kakegawa, Tomei Kikugawa, Tomei Makinohara, Tomei Yoshida, Tomei Oigawa, Tomei Yaizunishi.
Please also expect some delays since the buses need to detour around the closed section.
NEXCO announced that the restorative construction is due August 15.

Some parts of highway are still closed, causing a few highway buses to be cancelled.

Trains and highway buses halt due to earthquake

Due to an earthquake which occurred this morning, as of 8:00 AM:
- JR Shinkansen is operated at reduced speed between Tokyo and Shin-Osaka,
- JR Tokaidohonsen Line is halted between Atami and Toyohashi,
- JR Gotemba Line is halted between Kozu and Numazu,
- JR Minobu Line is halted between Fuji and Minobu, and
- Tomei Highway is closed between Tokyo IC and Mikkabi IC (both ways), and from Toyokawa IC to Mikkabi IC (one way).
