Hi,
I am also planning to climb that weekend with my husband. Have you got any particular route in mind? We were thinking of the following:
-bus from shinjuku to kawaguchi 5th station arrive late in the evening
-climb up during the night, stop only if we need to.
- see sunrise
-Go down the Gotemba-guchi Shin-go-gome (with the sandy surface)
-Bus from Gotemba-guchi Shin-go-gome to Gotemba station (need to figure our bus time)
-Gotemba station to Nuimazu station.
-We will probbaly head to Osaka then, trains go the other way to on to Tokyo.
We are fairly fit and would like to some extra company on this trip....

This sounds like exactly the trip I had in mind. When do you think you'd begin the hike? The night of the 18th?
eirefairy on 2010-09-06 21:16:21
yes, the night of the 18th. Do you speak Japanese by any chance?
Tysonsettle on 2010-09-06 21:54:20
I can get by, but I'm not fluent by any means. Is there some specific circumstance you need a Japanese speaker for?

Send an email to kiteflyer276@gmail.com and we can start to organise things.

I am also planning to hike up from Kawaguchi 5th station from Shinjuku on the 18th. From what I could find on the web, it looked to me that the buses left at either 7:45 or 9:40 arriving sometime between 10am and noon. Is that your understanding as well?
I would also like to have some company on the hike and would appreciate meeting up with you guys. I've done a fair amount of hiking at altitude including night hikes. My plan is to do an out and back, however, so we'd be going our separate ways on the way down.
Do you know exactly where to purchase the bus ticket to Kawaguchi 5th Station in Tokyo (Shinjuku) and which bus you'll be taking (assuming my timetable is accurate)?

Hi,
My name is Luis and I might be traveling to Fuji that same day with my sister. We are really interested in climbing it too but I'm not sure if weather and conditions are safe to do it without a guide.
Has any of you guys climbed it before?
I will be coming from Osaka so I could meet you guys there...do you have plans already for time and place to meet?
my email is luiscguajardo@hotmail.com
Cheers!

Hello Luis and others thinking of hiking Fuji on the 18th,
I have never hiked it before, but I think there is sufficient trail information to make for a safe and successful hike if the weather will cooperate.
I have also had the opportunity to hike several high altitude mountains in the Western US (Whitney, Elbert, etc) so I have a pretty good idea of what to expect and have the right equipment (among other things make sure you have good head lamp if you're thinking of doing a night hike).
I am planning to leave from Shinjuku to Kawaguchi 5th station. Do you plan to start from that trailhead as well?
eirefairy on 2010-09-14 23:12:27
Hi all,
Please note that I have decided not to go to mount fuji this weekend.
I hope you all have a great time!

I'm still going to Fuji this weekend. I want to do the night hike on the 18th. I'd like to leave from Shinjuku in the evening. I see we're expecting 20% chance of light rain. Does that deter anyone?
eroc on 2010-09-15 11:11:29
Tysonsettle,
I'm still planning to do the hike as well on the night of the 18th. I don't think the rain will be much of a deterrant as long as you have adequate rain gear. Are you sure there is transportation from Shinjuku to the 5th station in the evening? I couldn't find any train or bus schedules that listed an evening departure.

Well, my plan is to get there whenever I have to, and then wait if that's what it takes. Do you know the latest possible time to arrive?
ciprian on 2010-09-16 01:27:02
Hi guys,
I'm planning to do the hike as well on Saturday the 18th. I'm glad to see more people are interested. I've checked the bus timetable. It looks like we have two options to get to Kawaguchiko 5th Station:
1. Bus from Shinjuku at 7:45 AM (gets there at 9:40) and at 9:40 AM (gets there at 12:05). You'll need to call one of these numbers and make a reservation: 0353762222 or 0333761111.
2. Option 2 is to get the train to Kawaguchiko St and from there get a bus to the 5th station. Last bus seems to leaves Kawaguchiko at 13:50.
As you can see, for the night hike, both options get you there a bit too early.... Any other options? I guess if 4 of us get to Kawaguchiko we could share a taxi to the 5th station, which is about 10000 yen.
See you soon,
Ciprian

Ciprian and other hikers,
I'll be getting into Tokyo on Friday and try to pick up a bus ticket then. I will definitely be willing to split a cab fare from Kawaguchiko to the 5th Station as that would give us less 'dead time' but how would we coordinate this??

Thanks for the Info Ciprian,
I'll be going for option 2. I'm arriving in Yokohama around midnight on Friday, and I'll be trying to make my way around the mountains to Kawaguchiko Station by some point before the last bus. I'll bring a book and an ipod. If I don't hear from anyone before that last bus, I'll probably take it.

Hi Tysonsettle, Ciprian, and everyone else planning on climbing saturday night!
I am an international student at Kansai Gaidai University (between Kyoto/Osaka) and I am taking the night bus to Kawaguchiko tomorrow night (Friday) to arrive Saturday. I am also planning to do the ascent Saturday night, and would be very down for joining up - I sent an email to Luis and Tyson, but in case they didn't get it, I'm now posting here too! I'll probably just meet you all at the 5th station trailhead, but here's my number so we can be in touch: 080-3770-5207. My ketitai mail address is hipster.chan@softbank.ne.jp, if anybody has SMS and can get in touch that way.
Thanks!
Anna

Hey guys,
Nice to hear from you. So I'll try to take the second bus from Shinjuku as it seems to be a bit more convenient than taking the train to Kawaguchiko and then the bus. I'll spend the afternoon at Kawaguchiko 5th Station and hopefully we'll meet up there. I'll be waiting with a rose in my month so it will be easy to spot me. Only joking. :) I've got a light blue jacket. I'll text you once I get there, anyway. Off to do some shopping now.
See you soon,
Ciprian
