Anyone want to Climb Fuji in late May? and is it possible?

FORUM TOPIC jnewby

My cousin and I will be in Japan in late may and are want to climb Fuji. I understand it is not the official climbing season, but is it possible to climb? We are both experienced on the mount and we have summited some Colorado 14ers. Anyone want to join? Or have any input?

@arunchai: We do not intend to get a guide along because the route is quite established and it's very expensive to get one too. Maybe the trail might be covered with snow but I guess should be okay. Just don't wander too far off.

@joel You can check the hostel here: http://kshouse.jp/fuji-e/index.html. Starting from 2500 yen dorm room. We will be bringing winter clothing: baselayer, fleece and goretex outershell. Will be wearing spikes/snow cleats instead of crampons because will be bringing hiking boots instead of snowboots. Too heavy to carry around for our backpacking trip around Japan. Brought along headlamps since we might be climbing at night to see sunrise if the conditions are favorable. You also need to write in to the local police station to state your intention to climb during off season: http://www.city.fujiyoshida.yamanashi.jp/div/english/html/winter_climbin...
When are you guys intending to summit Mt Fuji?

@hansjk
I was thinking about having a guide because I don t have equipment to walk on snow , like spikes/snow cleats. may be less expensive if we are a group.
For the warm clothes i think i am good.
So are you taking with you a sleeping bag to sleep outside ? I dont think there is any hut open in may ?

arunchai on 2011-05-17 22:32:14

I just arrived in tokyo today, long trip; will be in Osaka on may 19.

arunchai on 2011-05-16 19:27:23

Hi , That would be a good option , meeting à K's House Mt Fuji on may 27.
I keep that in mind and try to plan my trip . However I am not surre I can make it , as I should be around Osaka before that date.
I think the main problem for a day trip , is the bus that goes from kawaguchi station to the 5th station takes 50 min. the first bus to go up in the morning is 9h50 and the last to go down to Kawaguchi go is 15h40 . Which does not leave enough time cimb the Fuji and then go back to the hostel .

I am thinking about taking a guide but it is so much expensive ! 62000 yen if one person, half if two people.

We will be taking Kawaguchiko route from Kawaguchiko 5th Station on 28 May morning to climb to the summit if possible depending on the snow condition. Then we will decide when we reach the mountain if we will stay overnight on the mountain to watch sunrise. If it's too cold or can't find a shelter, then we will come down. Staying at K's House Mt Fuji before our climb. How about you?

Hi Jnewby, Hansjk

I will be in Japan end of may and I would plan a climb to Fujisan but not on my own. (safety first !)
I am experienced in Hiking but not equiped ,nor ever used crampons though .
'd rather do it on day time.
My trip to Fuji would be more between may 28 and june 2 anyday.
Do you have any idea which route you'll take : kawaguchi ko , gotemba,Fujinomiya,Subashiri ? or place you'll stay before the climbing?

hansjk on 2011-03-15 20:57:06

hi, i've read from other websites that it is possible to climb off season, but with proper equipment (crampons, etc) and clothing. I'll be going to Japan with a friend at that time and we plan to climb Mt Fuji ard 28/29 May. I think the huts are not open at this time but we want to see sunrise so not sure if we should climb at night (which maybe dangerous at that time), or climb in the day.

Hi, Thanks for your advice. I have study a little more since posting this. As long as weather is good I believe crampons, proper clothing and possible trekking poles will make it very possible to climb. Are you interested in climbing and traveling to Fuji together together?

arunchai on 2011-06-07 15:50:12

So did you make it ? on May 28 or another day ? the weather was really bad on May 28.

hansjk on 2011-06-07 17:07:19

yeah, weather was really bad for the 3 days that we were in Kawaguchiko. We climbed on 27 May instead since it was supposed to be the best of the days that we were there. Started our climb at 11am after taking the first bus there and I only reached 9th station, 200 meters from the summit at 4.30pm but decided to call off the climb since it was getting late. Slide down the slope and ran all the way down through the Yoshidaguchi trail and reached Fujiyoshida in 3 hours. Will attempt again in the future when the weather is better.
