Mt. Fuji climb on mid-June

FORUM TOPIC viajero

Is it possible for an off-season climb either on June 20, 22 or 23, 2011? We are a group of international students from Niigata, and have never climb Mt. Fuji before. Do you recommended a guided tour or is it possible to climb without a guide? We welcome also other people who would like to join us.

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, there are no guides for Mt Fuji in the off-season. However, the route is well established and easy to navigate. I would recommend starting at Kawaguchiko 5th Station in the off-season since there is more shops and transportation there.

I will be attempting the ascent the same time as you. Depending on the weather, there might still be some lingering snow at the summit, which should be cautioned. Its different every year from what I researched.

Cheers!

UPDATE: I climbed Mt Fuji yesterday, 22 JUN, but was not able to reach
the summit due to snow and unsafe conditions at the top. I decided to turn around at 3500m (200m from the summit), along with 5 other Japanese climbers. The weather was very compared to days of rain prior. It was sunny, 27 C, and 10km/hr winds at 5th Station. My initial ascent was relatively easy, I reached 8th/9th Station in approximately 3.5hrs. However, the wind immediately increased to 50-70 km/hr at around 1pm making it more challenging to go up. The The route is covered in snow for the last 400m. The snow is approximately 30-35cm thick soft and slushy making it diffult and dangerous to traverse without alpine equipment. 200m before the summit, I decided to turn-around because it became unsafe. At around 3pm I returned to 5th Station and noticed large rain cloud covering the summit the rest of the day. The route is doable with the proper equipment and cooperating weather. During my ascent I also saw crews clearing snow and some mountain huts stocking food/equipment.

For those considering to climb during the pre-season, I would recommend waiting a least week or until the season opens 1 JULY. Otherwise, cold weather gear and alpine equipment is needed. Not for the faint of heart.

Thanks for all the advice, I enjoyed the climb. Hoping to reach the summit in the future
